Sentinel Circle Investigates: Alternative Societies

Alternative cultures exist on the margins of mainstream society, from punk collectives and DIY fashion to eco-villages and intentional communes. What once was known as counterculture during the 1960s has evolved into modern efforts to address loneliness, sustainability, and social disconnection. Instead of simply rejecting the status quo, people are now choosing to build communities including co-housing groups and ageing-care villages that foster collaboration, shared purpose, and emotional resilience. These aren’t gimmicks; they’re purposeful responses to gaps in our culture.

In this video, we trace the roots of today’s alternative societies, looking back at pacifist communes and wartime collectivism, and forward to practical solutions for ageing populations and environmental stewardship. We’ll examine how DIY ethics—seen in punk zines, thrift-fashion repurposing, and grassroots arts events—continue to energize these communities, connecting people online and offline. By understanding how and why these groups form, we can gain insight into broader social change and consider what alternative living might look like for ourselves—especially in supporting men’s mental health, fostering belonging, and redefining success outside traditional metrics.
