June 22, 2025, Matthew 28:18-20, "Disciples"
Disciple: learner who follows a master teacher: in Jesus' time it was more relational than just informational, and it involved sharing Christ's values and reproducing His teachings
Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus commanded His Disciples to teach people all the things that He taught them
Luke 6:40, concerning Christ, the student will never surpass the teacher, even though the student will become more Christ-like over time according to God's perfect will and timing
Luke 9:23, the painful reality of crucifixion was applied to living, as the follower of Christ needs to live and walk in the Spirit, relying on Christ instead of relying on self or survival habits acquired from the world. If people could rely solely on themselves, then there would be no need for a savior and father-figure teacher.
John 6:60-66, the real challenge of discipleship, including the people who desired something (the people who thought they signed up for something according to an advertisement) versus the people who needed the truth (the people who trusted in Christ daily)
Luke 14:28, understanding the cost and planning also applied to discipleship
In the New Testament, the term "Disciple" was used at least 260 times, whereas the term "Christian" was used far less (around 3 or more times). The former was often used to positively identify followers of Christ and members of the early Church.
Acts 17:6-9, an example of the cost of following Christ. The truth was told that Christ was the King, which was contrary to the decrees of Caesar. There are many selfish kingdoms still in this world today, which do not want people to know who the real King is.
2 Corinthians 3:14-17, Genesis 1:26-27, God's restorative project from the beginning, and the only sacrifice God asked from people was to simply stop sinning and walk in God's holiness
Revelation 12:10, 1 Peter 5:8, life stories and their frustrations prey upon those who do not keep God's redemptive story in their heart
Hebrews 5:11-14, "milk drinkers" or those who are weak in faith, who are not able to digest solid spiritual food. Entrusting authority to infants and small children often leads to much disappointment and trouble, as it should have been entrusted to well trained adults. Children grow up and become adequately prepared when they follow the Father.
Hebrews 12:1-2, Jesus Christ already lived the path and paved the path for disciples to follow
Matthew 7:14-15, the way to eternal life is narrow and few find it
2 Timothy 2:15, presenting oneself to God as one who has been approved by God. The Father expects His children to give Him their best, as He continuously lifts them up and sanctifies them if they are willing to obey His plan for them.
