Regular Model

This pastel drawing ‘Reclining Nude 02 (2013)’ is made during a live drawing session at Studio Brugman at Voorburg, Netherlands. The model became my regular model for 10 years to come. There were multiple reasons for that. First, she is committed to pose and she can lie very still. Secondly, she possesses all the right proportions even though she’s not that tall. Besides that, she looks as if time has treated her well, even though she’s not 18 anymore. We, the dutch are often wrong in estimating the age of asian people, I guess.

Horizontal Composition Yet Beautiful

This having said, we had her pose almost in the same position as the pose of the first session. Now I positioned myself opposite to her. The first position I looked at her in a bit of a slanted way. However, now her body was positioned horizontally. Such compositions can be a drag, turning models into a straight looking sausages. The position of her arms were showing diagonal structures though. Lucky me! Together with the round shapes of her belly and breasts the position was exciting enough. So I forged a beautiful pastel out of her.

Hatched Strokes

In 2013 I still really was much into hatching all the time. It is something I use to do from an early age on. Sometimes it’s hard to execute a pastel during a live drawing session in hatched strokes. Not this time though. Somehow I cut through the process of capturing her like warm butter. Done within one hour and I managed to keep the sketchy feel and still be accurate. That’s when you know you’re in love with your model! She surely captured my attention for the years to come.
