Have you ever wondered how {According to John} AKA {The Gospel According to John} sounded like during the first century AD? Have you ever wondered what the New Testament sounded like when it was originally written? While we’ll probably never understand how it sounded with absolute certainty we can get very close by using several techniques. For example, if someone wanted to reconstruct what 21st-century English sounded like– several centuries from now, they could look at spelling mistakes in order to get clues as to how it sounded. For example, people sometimes get the words: there, their, and there wrong– when they try to spell them out. Someone could look at those mistakes and conclude that these words most likely sounded very similar to each other if not identically to each other.
