LEVEL #6. The Money Box. H.C. Andersen. Speed Reading for 3, 4, 5 and 6-Year-Old Children. 722 wpm!
LEVEL 6 LESSON:
FIVE COMMON QUESTIONS and ANSWERS of SPEED READING
(If you find the background music distracting, you can mute it)
1.
Q. If I learn to speed read, will it hamper my ability to read slowly when I want to?
A. No. They are two different skills like walking and running. You don't lose your ability to walk just because you learn to run. The same is true of speed reading and slow reading. Sometimes you may want to read slow (poetry, scriptures, etc.), but other times you may want to speed read (newspaper, research projects, etc.). Speed reading amounts to an additional tool at your disposal, that you can use to get things done. It's like having a power tool in your toolbox, instead of just a screwdriver or a hammer.
2.
Q. I want to learn speed reading too. Should I try to teach myself to speed read while I am teaching my kids the skill?
A. YES. You can practice Speed Reading on LEVEL 4 or LEVEL 5 videos, while your child is practicing on LEVEL 1 or LEVEL 2. And don't forget to practice these skills in regular books (or e-books) that you read, day by day.
3.
Q. How young can kids be taught to speed read?
A. These new short training videos are designed to introduce Speed Reading to children who are as young as 3 years old, provided that they already know how to read before beginning to Speed Read. (There are various methods available for teaching your children to read, beginning as young as the age of 2 [ie. Glenn Doman's method, Brill Kids, Children Learning Reading, as well as other methods]).
ALSO, because SPEED READING and SLOW READING are two separate skills, there is no reason why a child's reading must be all of one and none of the other. Children can and should spend some daily time reading slowly, even though they may also be doing some daily SPEED READING.
Both skills have their proper place.
But I do recommend that a certain amount of time be set aside each day for SPEED READING ONLY (ie. just a couple of minutes per day for the very young kids [ie. 3 and 4 years], and more minutes per day as their attention span improves). This is because the part of the brain that Speed Reads needs a certain amount of regular exercise in order to gain the strength to be able to do a great job.
It's like running and walking. Just because someone may be a great runner, you will still see them walking part of the time.
4.
Q. If I don't speed read for a few months, will I lose the skill?
A. Maybe you will.
But, if you have already used the skill faithfully for several months immediately after learning to speed read, the answer is ‘No.’ However you may get "rusty" at it like the way people get rusty at keyboarding or at speaking a foreign language.
The solution? Brush up on it for a few minutes each day, and it will come back. Then get back on track and begin using Speed Reading every day in FUN, INTERESTING BOOKS.
5.
Q. How do you keep kids motivated during the first few days before they "catch on" to speed reading?
A. There are two major motivating factors.
a) The first is to make Speed Reading Time as FUN and INTERESTING as possible. This has already been mentioned in an earlier lesson. But it bears repeating. THIS IS KEY.
b) Another motivating factor is to tell interesting stories about people (adults as well as kids) who make good practical use of their speed reading. If you tell a few good, interesting stories each day, it keeps the kids a little bit more excited about doing their practice.
One story I heard about was a student who read his way through a library in 4 years. Another one was about another student who got each of his teachers to supply him with lists of great books in their particular subject areas. He read his way through all the great books on the lists, and learned all that each teacher knew on each subject.
