The First Match of Five Match Test series 2025 between India and England is underway at Headingley Leeds in London. This match is being played from 20th June to 24th June 2025. In this match England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bowl first under clear skies.
At stumps On first day of the match the visitors India posted a good total of 359 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in 85 overs after being asked to bat first. Sai Sudharsan made debut to test matches in this match.
While batting first India started well with their new opening pair of KL Raul and Yashasvi Jaiswal and were going on with great guns. They added record 91 runs for the first wicket in 24.5 overs.
This opening stand of 91 runs registered India's highest opening partnership at Headingley. The duo broke the record of Sunil Gavaskar and K Srikkanth who had put on 64 runs for the opening wicket in 1986.
This was Rahul and Jaiswal's second fifty plus opening partnership after their 201 run stand they put on together against Australia in Perth in November 2024.
The Indian openers laid a solid foundation and KL Rahul was first to go out after contributing well compiled 42 runs from 78 balls hitting 8 fours. He was caught by Joe Root of the bowling of Brydon Carse and India at this stage were 91 runs for loss of one wicket.
Then the debutant Sai Sudharsan walked in but could last only for four balls. Ben Stokes played on the debutant’s nerves and a leg side trap was set for the debutant after placing in leg Slip. Sudharsan got a tickle on the ball and was caught by Jamie Smith of the bowling of Ben Stokes.
He could play only four balls and went back to pavilion with out scoring. After brilliant start India were reduced to 92 runs for the loss of two wickets in 25.4 overs at the stroke of lunch.
After lunch Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his good work of batting and further strengthened the innings with Captain Shubman Gill and added 129 run from 163 balls for the third wicket.
Yashasvi Jaiswal played a sparkling innings and completed his fifth Test century. He played a gem of innings of 101 runs off 159 balls hitting 16 fours and one six.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was bowled with a beauty from Ben Stokes. The ball angled in from round the wicket and straightened sharply to rattle the off stump as Jaiswal pushed down the wrong line. At this stage India were well placed at 221 runs for the loss of 3 wickets.
Then Shubman Gill with Rishabh Panth batted sensibly with caution and aggression and added unbeaten 138 runs from 198 balls for the fourth wicket. They slaughtered the England bowlers all over the park.
At stumps on the opening day India eased into a comfortable position of 359 runs for three wickets . Skipper Subhman Gill is batting on 127 runs from 175 balls hitting 16 fours and 1 six. His deputy Rishabh Pant is not out on 65 runs from 102 balls hitting 6 fours and 2 sixes.
This is India's highest total on the opening day of a Test in England. Their previous best was 338 runs for seven wickets at Edgbaston in 2022. India's score of 359 runs is also the highest opening day total for a visiting team in England since South Africa made 362 runs for 4 wickets at The Oval in 2003.
Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 127 runs in this match at Headingley is the third highest score on captaincy debut by an Indian batter. Vijay Hazare's 164 not out against England in 1951 tops the list and Virat Kohli's 141 against Australia in 2014 is at second spot. Gill also became the 5th Indian captain to score a century on captaincy debut in men's Tests.
At stumps on Day one India are in control and closed the day at 359 runs for three wickets and are firmly in command. For England Ben Stokes chipped in with two wickets dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan. The wicket of KL Rahul was taken by Brydan Carse and the rest of England’s attack struggled.
