On April 14, 2025, at approximately 5:30 p.m., 25-year-old Kemonte Hampton was run over by an empty Tulsa Police Department (TPD) cruiser during an arrest for jaywalking near 1200 N. Lewis Ave in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

According to body and dash camera footage, Hampton was stopped by officers for crossing the street illegally. During the interaction, he fled, prompting a foot chase into a nearby parking lot.

Officers apprehended and handcuffed Hampton on the ground. One officer, identified as Ronald Leatherman, had left his patrol vehicle running and failed to put it in park. The cruiser, left in reverse, rolled backward and ran over Hampton’s legs and pelvis while he was pinned by officers.

He sustained injuries requiring hospitalization and is recovering, with reports indicating he may face long-term mobility issues.
