PSALMS is the second book of the wisdom books in the English Bible, but it is the first book of the Psalms or the Writings in the Hebrew Bible (Luke 24:44-45). The book contains 150 psalms and 2,461 verses. The book is usually divided into five sections. If these sections were added to the English Bible as books, it would make a total of 70 books. The five sections begin at Psalms 1, 42, 73, 90, and 107. The authors of the psalms are David, Asaph, Solomon, Ethan, Moses, the sons of Korah, and a few unknown authors.

The Book of Psalms is a collection of poems or songs written over a period of about eleven hundred years. Many of the poems were songs of trials, trouble, tribulation, thanksgiving, and triumph. The Book of Psalms is the favorite devotional book of many people. The primary doctrine of the trials is Jacob's Trouble (Jer. 30:7; Matt. 24:21). A doctrinal key word for the Tribulation or the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is the word Selah (2 Kings 14:7; Ps. 3:2; 7:5; 9:16-20; 32:4-7; 46:3-11; 47:4; 48:8; 59:13; 140:3-5; Isa. 16:1-5; Hab. 3:3-13).

The Book of Psalms is an hymn book with songs of praise and worship. The longest Psalm with 176 verses focuses upon the written words of God (Ps. 119). Doctrinally, the book is aimed at the Tribulation and the Millennium. The word faith does not appear in the book and the word grace occurs twice (Ps. 45:2; 84:11). This affirms a faith and works system under the law and the Great Tribulation (Deut. 30:11-15; Ps. 15; Ezek. 18:20-27; Matt. 24:13-15; Heb. 3:6; 6:4-6; 10:26; James 2:21-26; Rev. 12:17). There are entire Psalms about the Great Tribulation (Ps. 79), the Antichrist (Ps. 10, 52, 73, 109), the workers of iniquity (Ps. 14, 53), and the millennial reign of the Lord Jesus (Ps. 23, 76, 95-101). Psalm 22 reveals truths of the crucifixion and the prophecy of the new birth (John 3:10).
