NETANYAHU INDICTED ON CORRUPTION: Israeli Prime Minister faces his first day of cross examination in his criminal trial eight years after the investigations was first opened. He is charged with bribery, fraud, and breach of trust across three different corruption cases.

Netanyahu's testimony follows years of investigations, deliberations, legal proceedings, and delays. He is the first sitting prime minister in Israeli history to have taken the witness stand as a defendant.

Eli Assayag, a retired police Brigadier-General, oversaw the investigation into accusations of bribery, fraud and breach of trust against Netanyahu from mid-2018 until its conclusion in early 2019. In November 2019, then-Attorney-General, Avichai Mandelblit, filed formal charges against Netanyahu, accusing him of corruption in three cases.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was indicted Thursday in a series of corruption cases, throwing Israel’s paralyzed political system into further disarray and threatening his 10-year grip on power. He rejected calls to resign, angrily accusing prosecutors of staging “an attempted coup.”

The first-ever charges against a sitting Israeli prime minister capped a three-year investigation, with Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit indicting Netanyahu for fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes. Netanyahu becomes Israel’s first sitting prime minister to be charged with a crime. His predecessor, Ehud Olmert, was forced to resign a decade ago ahead of a corruption indictment that later sent him to prison for 16 months. Netanyahu is using war to stay in power and to avoid severe punishment.
