Why Paul Bragged About His Weaknesses | Catholic Daily Readings | June 21, 2025
Catholic Daily Readings for June 21, 2025 - Memorial of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga.
Paul said something that sounds completely crazy: "I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me." Nobody brags about being weak. We hide our weaknesses, compensate for them, minimize them, or pretend they don't exist. We certainly don't advertise them on social media or bring them up in job interviews.
Yet the Apostle Paul discovered something that completely revolutionized his understanding of success, strength, and spiritual power: divine power operates most effectively through human weakness, not despite it. When we acknowledge our limitations, we gain access to unlimited resources. When we stop pretending to be sufficient, we discover infinite sufficiency.
Saint Aloysius Gonzaga proved this principle with his remarkable life. Born into Italian nobility during the Renaissance with every earthly advantage imaginable - wealth, education, political connections, a promising future in leadership - he chose what looked like complete weakness to everyone around him. He renounced his inheritance, gave up his noble title, and joined the Jesuits to serve the poor.
At just 23 years old, while caring for plague victims in Rome, Aloysius contracted the disease and died. By worldly standards, his life was tragic waste of potential. By kingdom standards, his apparent weakness became the platform for divine power that has influenced people for centuries. He was canonized and became the patron saint of youth, inspiring countless young people to choose spiritual strength over worldly power.
This connects directly to Jesus' teaching about worry and anxiety in today's Gospel. When Jesus points to birds who don't worry about food and flowers that don't stress about clothing, He's showing us that apparent weakness - complete dependence on divine provision - actually leads to greater security than all our human efforts to control outcomes.
Today's readings challenge us to reconsider our relationship with limitation, struggle, and the areas where we feel inadequate. What if these aren't obstacles to overcome but platforms for experiencing divine power? What if our weaknesses aren't flaws to hide but opportunities for God to show up in ways that wouldn't be possible if we were strong enough to handle everything ourselves?
Whether you're struggling with health issues, financial stress, relationship problems, career setbacks, or just feeling inadequate in general, today's reflection offers a completely different perspective on how God works through human limitation.
