Webinar | Iran and the CCP: Why They Both Must Lose
Israel’s military campaign aimed at destroying the Iranian nuclear weapon and ballistic missile programs and taking out the leadership of the mullah’s military, intelligence and security apparatus has been underway for a week. While the job is not finished and Israeli aerial, covert and other operations are ongoing, one thing seems clear: The days of the ayatollahs’ totalitarian misrule of those who might be called the “laobaixing” of Iran – its common people who have been brutalized for decades by the government in Tehran like their counterparts in Communist China by the one in Beijing – are now numbered.
Unless, that is, the mullahocracy is once again thrown a lifeline by the U.S. government and/or its European allies determined to secure a so-called nuclear disarmament deal with the practical effect of legitimating the Iranian regime and discouraging a popular revolt that otherwise would likely take it out. President Trump has just announced that, while he has decided to use military force to help “finish the job,” he is going to wait on pulling the proverbial trigger for two weeks in light of recent signs that such a deal is now in prospect.
That possibility and its pursuit brings into sharp focus the question for today’s Committee on the Present Danger: China webinar: What impact might, on the one hand the mullahocracy’s demise and, on the other, its survival have on the regional and global ambitions and prospects of the Chinese Communist Party? Would the actual unconditional surrender of the CCP’s ally – with all that portends for the PRC’s energy imports and its colonial Belt and Road Initiative build-out and associated presence and power-projection – make more or less likely its aggressiveness in the Pacific, or elsewhere? Conversely, what would be the implications if the CCP’s proxy survives and lives to continue its clandestine nuclear activities, support for terrorism and destabilization of the Middle East and Western Hemisphere?
