9. Kumiho (Nine-tailed Fox)

The 9th Dream is the Kumiho.

The word "Kumiho" means a fox with nine tails. While foxes are seen as clever animals around the world and countless myths and legends surround them, stories of nine-tailed foxes are especially prominent in East Asia.

The oldest known record of the Kumiho is found in the *Shan Hai Jing*, a Chinese text believed to have been compiled during the Warring States period. One passage describes a land called Cheonggu, 300 li to the east, where jade abounds in the south and blue soil in the north. It mentions a fox-like creature with nine tails that cries like a baby and preys on humans. Consuming it, however, is said to protect one from evil spirits.

Interestingly, Cheonggu is said to refer to what is now Korea. This is considered the oldest written reference to the Kumiho.

While East Asian legends often describe the Kumiho as a beautiful woman who seduces men, the Korean version uniquely tells of her desire to become human. By enduring months of sincere love with a human man, she may achieve her goal. However, these stories often end in tragedy when her identity is revealed, or the lover runs away or is killed.

The Kumiho has become a symbol of fatal beauty. Women who enchant and ultimately destroy men are often labeled with terms like temptress, femme fatale, or seductress—but at the end of those labels, "Kumiho" often follows.

Men's fascination with such dangerous charm has birthed countless versions of the tale. Perhaps the Kumiho is a reflection of human desire and greed—a symbol of both temptation and destruction.

Yet the Kumiho is not only a destroyer; she is also a victim. Her tragedy is often a mirror of the contradictions in human nature.

In modern times, the perception of the Kumiho has changed. She is now seen as a powerful and attractive woman with a strong identity, someone who defies male dominance and embodies confidence and allure. People are drawn to such women, as they always have been.

The Kumiho who survives sorrow and reaches for humanity reflects the many faces of women in our lives today. Just like someone who loves her child and also loves her Chanel bag.

Imagine a noble moon in the dark sky, and a plum tree blooming in the dead of winter.
Before it sits a Kumiho with a seductive Chanel bag.
This unlikely pairing is the face of womanhood.
