"Impermanence is everywhere, yet I still think things will last. I have reached the gates of old age, yet I still pretend I am young."
-Patrul Rinpoche

Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
Patrul Rinpoche, a great, great revered Tibetan master of the previous century. He is pointing out in a kind of ironic way. That although everything around us is in a state of change and is impermanent, we still naively think that things are going to last and somehow make us happy. Then he says, I myself am now old. He says I've reached the gates of old age. He's approaching old age quickly. Yet I still pretend I'm young. This is a form of denial that Patrul Rinpoche's pointing out is very, very common for pretty much all of us. We don't necessarily embrace impermanence very readily. We it's easier to be in denial and ignore the reality that's right in front of us.
