Law and Freedom (Part 1): the Crisis of Authority (Episode 14)

No one is reading the old books anymore. Before the democratic age, there was authority that was hierarchical, judgmental, unequal and cruel. Then came freedom, equality and democracy! Now we live in Utopia! Well, that is a very nice mythology but not at all what is really going on. It turns out trading in old fashioned ideas like authority and patriarchy for radical freedom and equality, also leads directly to totalitarianism and whole new kinds of inequality and hierarchy far more terrible than the ones we inherited from our remarkably clever ancestors. It also turns out, we aren't so smart. In this video, we look at the law, freedom and authority through the lens of a great thinker and philosopher of the late 20th century, Thomas Molnar, and his work, "Authority and its Enemies" written in 1976.
