TextNow and Helium Mobile are interesting T-Mobile MVNOs or Mobile virtual Network Operator. They began as a VoIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol service that provided you a free phone number but could only be used over wifi. Fortunately, they began offering a T-Mobile Sim card (right now for 99 cents) so you can use Text Now like other MVNO's on T-Mobile's network like Metro by T-Mobile, Mint Mobile, and more. Plus, after TextNow new update, they now offer TextNow free essential data so you can use a small amount of data for specific apps for free.

Helium Mobile is a fascinating MVNO, and a great TextNow alternative. Not only do they use T-Mobile's network for most of their service, but they are also building their own hotspot network. More importantly their Zero plan comes with 3 gigs of data--and that's not essential data! The drawback is that you only get 100 minutes and 300 text for free each month. Which will work for a lot of users! Plus, they aren't VoIP based--so you get a real wireless number that supports verification codes and won't be recycled.

While free cell phone service from TextNow wireless sounds good, there are some things to be aware of that separate TextNow wireless free service from other T-Mobile MVNO's. Especially if you are an iPhone user. You also will have limited verification code support for different services. Helium does not have those downsides!
