Empowering Change: How Alive and Well Documentary Helps Families Heal from Within

What does it mean to be alive and well? For many of us, health gets defined by numbers on a test, fleeting moments of energy, or that elusive doctor’s thumbs-up. But what if true wellness is far richer—a mosaic of nutrition, mindset, environment, community, and trauma recovery? This is the journey at the heart of “Alive and Well: Healing from Within,” an upcoming documentary being crafted by podcast hosts Kay Boyer and Elanie Welch, as they seek to redefine what genuine healing looks like.
The Birth of a Big Idea
Neither Kay nor Elanie began their careers as filmmakers. Yet, as Elanie shares, “the idea found us”—a calling that blossomed organically from the stories shared on their Renegade Nutrition Podcast and Elanie’s struggles with infertility. As a nutritionist for over six years, Elanie “did everything right”: she followed nourishing diets, exercised, and prioritized her sleep. But when pregnancy remained elusive, she dove deeper. “There were also other problems I wasn’t dealing with,” she admits. Stress from a toxic workplace, unprocessed emotional trauma, and deep-seated limiting beliefs all surfaced as contributors to her struggle.
Through their podcast, Kay and Elanie met experts who opened their eyes to a recurring truth: healing is multifaceted. It’s not just about what you eat, but also about your environment, your mindset, and the old wounds you carry. Elanie’s own breakthrough came when she left her stressful job and sought help to process trauma and release her fears. Within months, after years of struggle, she and her husband conceived.
Telling Stories That Matter
The documentary isn’t only about Elanie’s story. “Alive and Well” follows the journeys of real people facing chronic and autoimmune health challenges—people like Dennis, who was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s at just 49, and his wife, who battles rheumatoid arthritis and other ailments while raising their young daughters. The prognosis was not optimistic until Dennis began a holistic healing journey guided by the principles Kay and Elanie champion: individualized nutrition, targeted supplements, stress reduction, and emotional healing.
The results are already inspiring. In just a few months, Dennis’s cognition has improved; he’s remembering details that once eluded him, and his family reports meaningful progress. Another subject, Jason, came to the project with rheumatoid arthritis and severe GI distress caused by medications. After six months, Jason’s joint pain has nearly vanished, and he’s regaining control of his health by addressing stress and reevaluating his life.
Beyond the Surface
The message underpinning Alive and Well is both radical and refreshingly hopeful: many chronic conditions deemed "incurable" can respond to a truly holistic, individualized approach. The film strives to provide viewers with real tools—nutrition, sleep, movement, emotional processing—and, more importantly, the empowering belief that healing is possible.
Their process defies the one-size-fits-all mentality so common in mainstream health discourse. “If you’re doing everything right and it’s still not working, maybe you haven’t considered all the pieces,” Elanie says. Those pieces might include leaving a toxic job, confronting old emotional wounds, or simply believing that change is possible.
A Grassroots Movement
Their mission isn’t easy. Lacking major studio funding (and unwilling to compromise their message for agenda-driven grants), Kay and Elanie are turning to grassroots crowdfunding. The support so far—from local farm-to-table dinners to wellness retreats—demonstrates a groundswell of community hunger for authentic, hope-filled stories of healing.
Their target is ambitious: $200,000 to finish the documentary and bring these stories to the world. But as they see it, this is a project fueled by the “life enthusiasts”—people who know that real change comes from within, and who want to see new models of healing reach those who need them most.
