James Callaghan, probably an underrated Prime Minster, often maligned, for his policies, and blamed for Thatcher’s rise to power, as well as the “Winter of Discontent”, situations, neither of which, could have been predicted…hindsight is a fantastic thing

Callaghan told ‘The Oldie Magazine’ (In October 1999) that he “would not be surprised to be considered as Britain's worst prime minister in 200 years”. He also said in that interview, and that he "must carry the can" for the Winter of Discontent.

Mr. Callaghan died on 26 March 2005, so clearly missed the “rabble” that would follow in his footsteps into No.10, to become Prime Minister, and contest that title, “Worst Prime Minister in 200 years”.

As someone who held all four Great Offices of State; Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1964 to 1967, Home Secretary from 1967 to 1970 and Foreign Secretary from 1974 to 1976, as well as Prime Minister from 1976 to 1979, was a fantastic achievement, rarely surpassed.
