The First Murder in Human History: Story of Cain and Abel | Quran verse 27–31 of Surah Al-Ma’idah Explained
Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 82th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe, The First Murder in Human History: Story of Cain and Abel | Quran verses 27–31 of Surah Al-Ma’idah Explained
Verses 27–31 of Surah Al-Ma’idah recount the story of the two sons of Adam—commonly identified as Qabil (Cain) and Habil (Abel)—a deeply symbolic and instructive tale that explores the themes of jealousy, piety, sin, and the value of life. This is the first recorded murder in human history and serves as a powerful moral lesson, not just about the consequences of uncontrolled emotion, but about the inner state of the human soul when it disconnects from divine consciousness. The story is introduced in verse 5:27 with a command to the Prophet Muhammad ? to **“recite to them the story of Adam’s two sons in truth.”** This phrase immediately underscores the authenticity of the narrative and its importance as a divine teaching, not just a historical anecdote.
Both sons were instructed to offer a sacrifice to Allah. The verse says: **“Each offered a sacrifice, and it was accepted from one of them but not from the other.”** According to Islamic tradition, Habil was a sincere and righteous man, offering the best of his flock as a sacrifice, while Qabil’s heart was not pure—he offered inferior produce, lacking sincerity and devotion. This contrast in intentions is critical. Allah does not accept offerings based on quantity or appearance, but on the sincerity and taqwa (God-consciousness) behind them. As verse 27 of Surah Al-Ma’idah continues, the rejected brother, Qabil, reacts with rage and jealousy, saying, **“I will surely kill you.”** This reaction marks a fatal turning point—not because his offering was rejected unjustly, but because his heart failed to submit to the will of Allah and instead chose envy over repentance.
Habil, in contrast, responded with calm wisdom and fear of Allah. He said: **“Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous.”** With this simple yet profound statement, Habil shows a deep understanding of divine justice. He doesn't argue or protest; he explains that acceptance lies in sincerity, not favoritism. He continues in verse 28 of Surah Al-Ma’idah, saying, **“If you should raise your hand against me to kill me—I shall not raise my hand against you to kill you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds.”** This is not weakness, but spiritual strength. Habil chooses to refrain from violence, trusting in Allah’s judgment. His choice reflects a higher moral ground: he values righteousness over retaliation and places his trust in divine justice rather than taking matters into his own hands.
In the following verse (29 of Surah Al-Ma’idah), Habil further declares, **“Indeed, I want you to bear my sin and your sin so you will be among the companions of the Fire. And that is the recompense of wrongdoers.”** This statement emphasizes a profound Quranic principle: those who commit injustice not only earn the burden of their own sins but also may bear additional burdens when they harm others unjustly. Habil warns his brother of the severe consequences in the afterlife, showing concern even as his own life is threatened.
Despite this clear moral reasoning and the peaceful stance of Habil, Qabil’s envy overwhelms him. As verse 30 of Surah Al-Ma’idah states, **“And his soul permitted to him the murder of his brother, so he killed him and became among the losers.”** The phrasing here—“his soul permitted to him”—is crucial. It indicates that the real battleground was within Qabil’s own heart. The voice of jealousy and pride was stronger than the voice of righteousness. By succumbing to it, he committed the first murder in human history and earned the label of being among the losers—those who sacrifice their soul’s purity for fleeting emotions.
Following the murder, verse 5:31 delivers a striking scene. Allah sends a crow that scratches the ground to show Qabil how to bury the body of his brother. Upon witnessing this, Qabil says, **“Woe to me! Have I failed to be like this crow and hide the body of my brother?”** Then, filled with shame, he buries him. This part of the story is not just about the act of burial—it symbolizes the weight of guilt and the realization of wrongdoing. Qabil had no knowledge of what to do with his brother’s corpse until Allah taught him through a creature of lesser intellect. The crow becomes a sign of humility and learning, reminding Qabil—and all of us—how low a person can fall when guided only by pride and hatred, and how even animals can serve as messengers of divine wisdom.
This tragic story serves as a universal lesson in human ethics and spirituality. It teaches that jealousy can destroy families and even lead to murder when left unchecked. It also reinforces that piety is not about appearances but the sincerity of the heart. Allah accepts deeds only from the righteous, and those who act out of malice and arrogance ultimately harm no one more than themselves. In its short span, the tale of Qabil and Habil encapsulates one of humanity’s greatest moral struggles: the battle between ego and submission, between rage and restraint, and between the soul’s destruction and its salvation.
With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen
Allah Hafiz
