Guards. Guns. Checkpoints. North Korea’s Deadly Escape Route

North Korea is one of the hardest countries in the world to escape. There’s no freedom of movement—checkpoints block every major road, and guards with AK-47s are always waiting. Along the border, soldiers stand with guns ready to shoot, posted every 100 meters. Since the early 2000s, the number of successful escapes has dropped dramatically. I dream of the day North Korean people can travel freely. What I look forward to the most is telling my friends what freedom feels like.
