Why There Is No Arguing in Heaven: A Mayan Myth

Written and illustrated by Deborah Nourse Lattimore.

The story revolves around Hunab Ku, the Creator God of the Mayas, who is weary of the squabbling between the Moon Goddess and Lizard House.

To resolve their disputes, Hunab Ku challenges them to create a being that will worship all the gods. The Moon Goddess and Lizard House create men of mud and then men of wood, but these creations do not satisfy Hunab Ku. They speak like twigs, move like planting sticks, and think like stones, and they do not worship the gods.

Eventually, the Maize God succeeds in creating beings that respect the spirit of men, and through time, he takes his place next to Hunab Ku.
