Week 21 Readings of our 2025 Chronological Bible-in-a-Year Reading Challenge have us witness a monumental shift in the history of God's people when the Kingdom of Israel is split in two!

In this tutorial, Chad explains how the 10 northern tribes move to establish their own kingdom, complete with their own places of worship to foreign gods, far away from Jerusalem and the legacy of David. From hereon in, it will be these majority tribes in the north who are referred to as the Kingdom of Israel.

This split leaves Solomon's son ruling, from Jerusalem, over the remaining tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and the Levites. This southern kingdom is also called the Kingdom of Judah where descendants of David retain control of the throne.

This week's readings cover a period of approx. 100 years post-Solomon (circa 930–830BC) with both kingdoms having no less than 7 kings reign over that period. Various prophets and seers, the most famous of which being Elijah in the north, minister also in this time.

Chad also discusses the Book of Obadiah, who, some suggest, ministered here in this period. Obadiah prophesies judgement over the nation of Edom, a rebuke from Yahweh for gloating over the misfortunes of Judah and Jerusalem.
