1 Samuel 21:1-22:23, Everyone Who Was in Distress Joined David

Now on the run from King Saul, David convinces the priest in Nob to give him the consecrated bread from the tabernacle then flees to Gath. Discovering that the Gathites know that he has been anointed king of Judah, he pretends madness before the King Achish and escapes to the cave of Adullam. “And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him” (1 Samuel 22:2 NKJV). King Saul commands Doeg the Edomite to slay the priests of Nob in retribution for assisting David.
In the New Testament, Jesus referred to David’s eating of the consecrated bread when He revealed His deity to the religious leaders of His day. Pastor Kevin also shows how this incident foreshadowed Jesus’ role as our High Priest. We also see how Doeg the Edomite typifies Israel’s enemies today. Pastor Kevin exhorts believers to hold fast to the Bible’s clear teaching about God’s everlasting covenant with the Jewish people, which includes their right to be in the land of Israel.
