Deputies justified in using deadly force on domestic violence suspect in Piedmont shooting

Greenville, SC - The Greenville Sheriff’s Office released a critical incident report determining whether or not deputies were justified in using deadly force in a shooting that took place in Piedmont on April 30.

The sheriff’s office said deputies were conducting surveillance around the 800 block of South Piedmont Highway around 1:45 p.m. in order to help the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office apprehend a wanted suspect.

Officials report 36-year-old Terry Eugene Rhodes, Jr. was wanted in Anderson County in connection to a domestic violence incident involving a firearm. His warrants included the following:

* Domestic violence
* Discharging a firearm into a vehicle
* Malicious damage
* Failure to stop for a blue light

Law enforcement saw Rhodes walking down a dirt highway with another person at 1:48 p.m.; a deputy approached him in an unmarked pickup truck, but the suspect and the other person attempted to run in opposite directions, officials said.

Officials report deputies saw the suspect arm himself with a pistol as he ran and gave commands to Rhodes to drop the gun.

Rhodes did not comply with the deputy’s command, and a deputy shot him, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office said deputies took Rhodes into custody and provided him with immediate medical attention. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and later to the Greenville County Detention Center, where he received the following additional charges:

* Resisting arrest
* Unlawful possession of a firearm
* Possession of a firearm by a person convicted of certain crimes
* Distribution of methamphetamine
* Possession of marijuana

Rhodes’ pistol was collected as evidence, officials said.

On June 14, the sheriff’s office said an internal review determined that the deputies’ deadly force was justified.
