Oklahoma! is a 1955 American musical film based on the 1943 musical of the same name by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, which in turn was based on the 1931 play Green Grow the Lilacs written by Lynn Riggs.
The film tells the story of farm girl Laurey Williams (Shirley Jones) and her courtship by two rival suitors, cowboy Curly McLain (Gordon MacRae) and the sinister and frightening farmhand Jud Fry (Rod Steiger).
A secondary romance concerns Laurey's friend, Ado Annie (Grahame), and cowboy Will Parker (Nelson), who also has an unwilling rival.

Set in Oklahoma Territory shortly after the turn of the 20th century, the story follows the romantic entanglements of several young people. Curly is a cowboy who has trouble admitting his feelings to Laurey, as she does to him, because of their stubbornness. Judd, the hired hand at Laurey's farm, tries to come between them. Ado Annie is torn between Will, a cowboy who has strong feelings for her, and Ali Hakim, a peddler who's a ladies' man and doesn't want to marry her.

Three weeks later, Laurey and Curly are married as everyone celebrates the territory's impending statehood ("Oklahoma"). Ali Hakim returns with Gertie, whom he has recently married after being threatened by her father with a shotgun. A drunken Jud reappears, kisses Laurey and punches Curly, and they begin a fistfight.
The fight continues until Jud pulls a knife on Curly. When Curly throws him, Jud lands on his own knife, groans, and lies still on the ground. The crowd tries to help, but Jud is dead. The newlyweds are distraught. There’s nothing that can be done about Jud, but Cord Elam, a Federal Marshal, thinks Curly should turn himself into the judge that night, despite their train leaving town in 20 minutes.
