📖 Today’s Bible Reading: Matthew 20:20–28 – The Request of James and John - Episode 48
In Matthew 20:20–28, the mother of James and John, two of Jesus’ closest disciples, approaches Him with a bold request — that her sons sit at His right and left in His kingdom (places of highest honor). It’s a very human moment, reflecting the disciples’ ongoing misunderstanding of what Jesus’ kingdom truly is. ✝️

✨ Jesus’ Response and Teaching:
Jesus doesn’t directly rebuke the request at first. Instead, He responds with sobering clarity:

“You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?”

The "cup" refers to suffering, sacrifice, and ultimately, death — which Jesus Himself would soon endure on the cross. James and John boldly say "We can," but Jesus tells them that while they will share in His suffering (which eventually happens — James is martyred, John is exiled), it is not His to grant positions of honor. That authority belongs to the Father.

When the other ten disciples hear about this, they become angry — not necessarily because they understand the message, but likely because they, too, desire greatness. Jesus uses this moment to redefine greatness entirely:

“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.” (vv. 26–28)

💡 Deeper Meaning:
This passage is a complete paradigm shift from worldly thinking. In Jesus’ kingdom:
True greatness is found in humility.
Authority is given to those who serve, not those who seek power.
Sacrifice is the highest form of leadership.
Jesus Himself is the model, who gave His life not for glory, but for us.

🙌 Application for Our Lives:
Reevaluate what success means.
-Are you striving for recognition, or looking for ways to serve others?

Seek humility in leadership.
Whether at work, in church, or in family, lead by example, with love.

Follow Jesus’ example.
He didn’t cling to divine status, but stepped into our world, washed feet, healed the sick, and gave His life. That is the kind of love and leadership we’re called to imitate.

🧠 Reflection Question for the Audience:
Where in your life is God calling you to serve rather than be seen?

Matthew 20:20–28 (NABRE)
The Request of James and John

20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee approached him with her sons and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something.
21 He said to her, “What do you wish?”
She answered him, “Command that these two sons of mine sit, one at your right and the other at your left, in your kingdom.”
22 Jesus said in reply, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?”
They said to him, “We can.”
23 He replied, “My cup you will indeed drink, but to sit at my right and at my left, this is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
24 When the ten heard this, they became indignant at the two brothers.
25 But Jesus summoned them and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and the great ones make their authority over them felt.
26 But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;
27 whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.
28 Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
