Description:
Kirk Fell is a Wainwright and the home fell of Wasdale Head. Visitors eyes are often drawn to Scafell Pike and Great Gable and so this remains a gem hidden in plain sight in that its plain grassy slope faces the campsite and Wasdale Head Inn. Its true nature is only revealed once approached from the opposite side. In this walk, we leave the free car park at Wasdale Head, take the path at the side of the pub known as Moses Trod and head left into the valley to find Black Sail Pass. Wainwright notes that this is the best ascent and the steady but stable path takes us up to our first view of Kirkfell Crags.

We take the path over the beck and onto the crags for an exciting scramble until we reach the grassy plateau. From here, we complete a gentle ascent to the summit whilst admiring views over the Scafell Massif, Mosedale Horseshoe and Great Gable. This summit has unique views not to be missed.
Working our way down to the East Top we get even more spectacular views over the Western and Southern fells. A relatively steep descent down to Blackhead Tarn, before a more gentle descent is taken following Gable Beck down to the valley floor. We join Moses' Trod, which is an old smuggling path and trade route used by the slate mines with its name coming from Moses Rigg, a slate worker, bootlegger and smuggler. This takes us once again which takes us to the Wasdale Head Inn.

This is a fantastic Lake District walk which has fantastic views over Great Gable and Scafell Pike amongst many others. Most people visiting this peak will be Wainwright bagging and this is well worth the trip as one of the best walks in the Lake District. This is a fantastic 9km walk, I hope you enjoy it!
