STUNNING Illgill Head & Whin Rigg with Ancient Stone Circles

We start today’s trek in the Miterdale Forest car park, which is free. From here we head into the forest turning right to ascend through the pines onto Irton Fell. Then it is a steady ascent to our first Wainwright, Whin Rigg. There are spectacular views to our right over Wast Water and the surrounding fells. We continue forward across the gentle top, past the tarn, to our second Wainwright, Illgill Head. With the Scafell massif ahead it is a steamer descent to Maiden Castle Cairn and turning right we head to Burnmore Tarn. From here we work our way over Eskdale Moor to the ancient stone circles which stand mysteriously in the landscape. After pondering the stones we head over to Miterdale depending to a steady path, across the river and once again back to our start point. This is a great way to collect these 2 Wainwrights with the stone circles for added interest. which an ancient Norse name meaning gorse-covered ridge.

The Lake District National Park has several stone circles. Some say they were sights for worship by religions such as the druids. Others thought they may be for harvest or sacrificial purposes. Whatever the reason, these 4000 year old stone in the lake district still ask the question today as to why are they there?
