Description:
We start today’s walk in the picturesque Lakeland village of Glenridding. This is the most popular start point for a trek up to Helvellyn. From the village we head along Glenridding Beck past the campsite and turning left following a steep 600m ascent to Birkhouse Moor. It’s good to get some rest breaks and admire the view back to Ullswater and surrounding fells. Once passing Birdhouse Moor we gain sight of our 2 Wainwrights, Catstye Cam and Helvellyn. It is a steady approach to our first grade 1 scramble, Striding Edge. A notorious knife edge ridge that features large in Lake District legend due to its beauty and danger. Once complete, it is a climb to the summit of England’s 3rd Highest summit, Helvellyn, then another scramble down Striding Edge before a short up to our second Wainwright, Catstye Cam. Once submitted, we head down its nose and join the main path as it descends into the valley to join Glenridding Beck once again. Flowing the Beck downstream we cross the bridge at the YHA and from here it is an easy track back into the village. This is a fantastic walk with scrambles, 2 Wainwrights and fantastic views throughout. I hope you enjoy it.
