OFFENSIVE CHATTER & DRIBBLE PUSH v. SIDELINE PIN-IN DEFENSE:

One, of many, aspects of coaching I miss is working with young men on their communication skills. On both sides of the ball, we wanted our players to have “Conversations-on-the-Fly,” in regards to what was going on around them. We found it easier for young men to learn to communicate with exacting specificity when playing defense. It was always a challenge to create an “Offensive Chatter” mentality. However, once the players have bought in, nothing but bad stems from it. You’ll be surprised, you’ll walk into your locker room at halftime & your seniors will be telling the younger players what they need to do, just as an example.

In this clip, the first thing you’ll see is Dominique King #35 & Shawn Flanagan #15, without any prodigy from the coaches, create a dialogue regarding how Perrysburg’s players are pinning ball handlers to the sideline & not allowing ball reversal. In this situation, we had to “Dribble Push” the wing to the weak side of the court & send a shooter to the strong side short corner. If the ball cannot be reversed, the ball handler (Shawn Flanagan) has to drive it & shoot it, as we have a numeric advantage on the weak side of the court - for defensive rebounding.
