What the Quran Says About Jews and Christians Altering Their Books
Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 79th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe,What the Quran Says About Jews and Christians Altering Their Books.
Verses 13–15 of Surah Al-Ma’idah address a profound issue related to corruption and deception by some among the Jews and Christians, two communities that were historically entrusted with divine scriptures and guidance. These verses provide critical insight into how certain individuals within these groups altered sacred texts, distorted meanings, and abandoned the covenant made with Allah. The Qur’an presents this as a moral and spiritual deviation from the trust given to them, emphasizing that such behavior did not arise from ignorance, but from deliberate choices that had far-reaching consequences.
In verse 13 of Surah Al-Ma’idah, Allah speaks about the Children of Israel, stating: **“So for their breaking of the covenant, We cursed them and made their hearts hard. They distort words from their \[proper] usages and have forgotten a portion of that of which they were reminded. And you will still observe deceit among them, except a few of them. But pardon them and overlook \[their misdeeds]. Indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.”** This verse continues the theme from the previous one, highlighting that the consequences of breaking a divine covenant are severe. When the Children of Israel turned away from their responsibilities, Allah's curse came upon them—not as an act of revenge, but as a result of their persistent rebellion and moral failure.
One of the major accusations mentioned in this verse is the distortion of words. This refers to the deliberate twisting of divine revelation—either by altering the text itself, manipulating the context, or misinterpreting it to suit worldly desires. Instead of preserving the authenticity of divine guidance, some among them sought to reshape it according to their agendas, misleading their followers and losing the essence of the original message. Additionally, they “forgot a portion” of what they had been reminded of—indicating a willful negligence, where parts of the scripture were ignored or conveniently overlooked when they no longer aligned with their interests.
The verse also acknowledges that deceit became a recurring characteristic among many in these communities, although it makes an important distinction—**“except a few of them.”** This clarification is crucial; the Qur’an does not paint entire religious groups with a broad brush but rather criticizes specific behaviors and actions of certain individuals within them. There have always been sincere and righteous people among the Jews and Christians, but the widespread corruption among their leaders and scholars is what led to the overall deviation.
Despite the wrongdoing described, the verse ends on a remarkably compassionate note. Allah instructs the Prophet Muhammad ? and the believers to forgive and overlook the transgressions of the People of the Book. This call for mercy reflects the divine standard of justice balanced with compassion. Even when confronted with deception and betrayal, Muslims are reminded to uphold high moral conduct, exercising patience and kindness, as Allah loves those who act with ihsan (excellence in character).
Verse 14of Surah Al-Ma’idah then turns attention to the Christians: **“And from those who say, ‘We are Christians,’ We took their covenant; but they forgot a portion of that of which they were reminded. So We caused among them enmity and hatred until the Day of Resurrection. And Allah is going to inform them about what they used to do.”** Like the Jews, the Christians also received a divine covenant. They were given the Gospel and instructed to live by its teachings, follow the example of Jesus (Isa ???? ??????), and uphold righteousness and sincerity. However, they too neglected parts of the revelation. This forgetfulness was not accidental—it implies a conscious decision to abandon elements of divine instruction.
As a result of this spiritual deviation, the verse explains that Allah caused **“enmity and hatred”** to arise among them, a division that has historically manifested in various sects, denominations, and even conflicts within the Christian world. This internal disunity is seen as a divine consequence for abandoning the true path. It is important to understand that such division and conflict are not merely historical observations; they are moral lessons on what happens when divine guidance is ignored or manipulated. The verse ends with a reminder that Allah will ultimately make them aware of their deeds, indicating a final reckoning in the Hereafter.
Verse 15 of Surah Al-Ma’idah brings a turning point and a message of hope. Allah says: **“O People of the Scripture, there has come to you Our Messenger to make clear to you much of what you used to conceal of the Scripture and to overlook much. There has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book.”** This verse announces the coming of Prophet Muhammad ? as a reformer and a mercy. He is sent to clarify truths that had been hidden or distorted, to expose falsehoods, and to restore the purity of divine revelation. The “light and clear Book” refers to the Qur’an, which serves as a final, uncorrupted source of divine guidance. It is a beacon for those willing to return to sincerity, truth, and submission to Allah.
Together, these verses serve as both a critique and a call for reflection. They expose how spiritual corruption and manipulation of sacred texts can lead a community away from divine favor. Yet, they also extend a hand of reconciliation through the Prophet and the Qur’an, emphasizing that the path to Allah is always open for those who seek it sincerely.
With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen
Allah Hafiz
