India Battles Severe Heatwave; IMD Issues Red Alert for Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan | Spotlight | N18G

India is grappling with severe heatwave conditions as the summer season sets in, with North India already experiencing sweltering temperatures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for severe heatwave conditions across several states, highlighting the intensifying crisis. As of today, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan are all under a heatwave "red alert." The IMD reported a "feel-like" or heat index value of nearly 52 degrees Celsius for the capital, Delhi, on Wednesday, underscoring the extreme conditions. An orange alert has also been issued for heatwave conditions in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh. Beyond immediate responses, concerns are mounting over the preparedness of Indian cities to face severe heatwave conditions in the long term.
