Back in the early 20th century, the White River was notorious for devastating floods, like the record-breaking ones in 1915 and 1927, which wiped out crops and livelihoods. That spurred the Flood Control Act of 1938 under President Roosevelt, leading to the construction of Bull Shoals Dam between 1947 and 1951.

At the time, it was the fifth largest concrete dam in the world, built to tame the river’s wild nature and generate power. It created Bull Shoals Lake, now a 94,000-acre playground, and transformed the White into a world-renowned trout fishery with its cold, clear tailwaters.
