Cristina Fernández must go to prison

The political career of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has come to an end. She was Vice President of Argentina and later President. The Supreme Court confirmed that she must go to prison for six years. Additionally, she will never be allowed to run for office again.

Now the question is, will she really go to jail? Many celebrate that there is finally equality before the law, that privileges are over.

In addition, her assets have been seized and confiscated — both real estate and money. It is estimated at 84 billion Argentine pesos, equivalent to 70 million USD.

Now many are asking, will this trigger a domino effect? Who will be next in the region? Pedro? AMLO? Correa?

Others shout “lawfare,” but justice has spoken, and Cristina has fallen.

The Supreme Court of Argentina upheld the conviction of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, former president and former vice president of the country, for corruption during her administration. The sentence, which had been previously issued by lower courts, condemns her to six years in prison and a lifetime ban from holding public office. The ruling is related to the irregular awarding of public works contracts in the province of Santa Cruz, where contracts were found to have been steered toward businessman Lázaro Báez, an ally of the Kirchner government.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered the seizure of assets and funds amounting to approximately $70 million, due to illicit enrichment stemming from the case. Many see this decision as a milestone in Argentina’s fight against corruption, while supporters of Fernández claim it is an example of "lawfare", or judicial persecution for political purposes. The ratification of the conviction marks a turning point in the country's recent history and effectively ends Cristina Fernández’s political career — at least from a legal standpoint.
