In this episode of Nurses Out Loud, David, Ashley, and Nicole discuss the ongoing jury trial of Grace Schara. Nurse David has traveled to Appleton, WI, to watch the trial from inside the courthouse.

An important point of contention has been the removal of Grace’s father, legal advocate, and legal POA-HC, Scott Schara. The nurses discuss “staff splitting,” where inconsistencies create tension between patients, visitors, and staff alike.

The nurses have been unimpressed with tactics taken by the hospital’s defense, including painting Scott as a “conspiracy theorist” and making tone-deaf appeals to authority like CNN and Harvard. The hospital also slandered the FLCCC doctors as having “all lost their board certifications,” a dishonest and misleading claim.

The nurses hear and discuss the powerful testimony of expert witness Dr. Berdine, who explained how he was helping with a prosecution instead of a defense for the first time in his long career as an expert witness. “I answered the call,” he said, after detailing “countless” breaches of the standard of care, including “the worst clinical decision I have ever witnessed in over 46 years of medical practice.”

“It was not just a breach of the standard of care, it was insane.”

For those who would defend the hospital and their treatment of Grace, a question: if our “standards of care” were so impeccable, why did the patients hospitalized in the US die at such higher rates than anywhere else in the world?
