My name is Amrapali, and I lived in ancient India around the 6th century BC, during a time of powerful kings, deep spiritual awakenings, and rising cities like Vaishali, which was one of the world’s first republics. My life was full of contrasts—beauty and heartbreak, fame and renunciation, luxury and spiritual peace. People have called me many things: a dancer, a courtesan, a queen of hearts, and later, a follower of the Buddha. Let me tell you how I became all of those.
I was not born into wealth or nobility. According to legend, I was found as a baby under a mango tree in a royal grove, and that's why I was named Amrapali—the girl of the mango tree. The people of Vaishali adopted me, and as I grew, they saw that I was not just beautiful—I was clever, graceful, and confident. In time, I became the official nagarvadhu, or "royal courtesan" of the city. That title may sound strange today, but in my time, it was a respected position. I wasn’t owned by any man. I chose who I spoke with, danced for, and entertained. Poets sang of me, princes admired me, and the elite of Vaishali all wanted to be in my presence.
But with beauty and fame came loneliness. I saw how men praised me in public and judged me in private. I lived in a palace, yet I longed for something deeper. Then one day, the Buddha came to Vaishali. I had heard whispers of his wisdom, but when I heard him speak with gentleness and clarity, it felt like he was speaking directly to my soul. He didn’t see me as a courtesan or a symbol—he saw me as a person, a seeker, a human being trying to understand the world. That moment changed my life.
I invited him to dine at my home, and after that visit, I renounced my wealth, my fame, and my fine robes. I became a follower of the Buddha, dedicating myself to the path of peace, compassion, and simplicity. I gave up everything the world said should matter, and yet for the first time, I felt truly free. I joined the order of Buddhist women, and I spent the rest of my life teaching others, not through songs or dances, but through presence, kindness, and wisdom.
And what have archaeologists discovered about my world? Quite a bit, actually. Excavations at ancient Vaishali have revealed brick monasteries, columns erected by Emperor Ashoka, pottery, coins, and even relic stupas—proving that my city was once a thriving hub of culture, politics, and early Buddhist thought. My story might live in legends, but the traces of the world I walked through are real and still being uncovered.
If there’s one lesson I hope you take from my life, it’s this: your past does not define your future. You can be praised, criticized, admired, or ignored—but none of that determines your worth. What matters is the path you choose next. And if you ever feel lost, like I once did, remember that sometimes, the greatest strength lies in letting go and starting over. Thank you for listening.
