Using the Very Large Telescope in Chile, researchers observed a young star called 2MASSJ161 surrounded by a swirling disk of gas and dust. Inside the disk, they found spiral arms and a gap that suggest a giant planet may be forming.

Lead researcher Christian Ginski and his team compared the disk’s features to ripples in a pond, which often occur when a new planet begins to carve out its orbit. This supports long-standing theories of how planets form around young stars like our Sun.

The observation helps confirm how gas giants such as Jupiter might have formed in our solar system, and it offers a direct visual of a process that usually unfolds over millions of years.
