I was very interested in giving these new buds a try, firstly because they are the first with this clip-on open ear design I have tried, and also because of the range of features on offer for the low price, currently reduced on Amazon to £25.99.
In the attractive and rather strikingly designed branded box I received the earbuds, recharging case, USB-C charging cable, and a well printed and easy to read user guide. Build quality seems OK, not fantastic as the charging case feels a tad lightweight to me, but the buds themselves feel well made and robust despite being larger than average although weighing just 5.1g each.
There was a time when you had to pay plenty to get decent quality True Wireless Earbuds but the introduction of Bluetooth 5.0 seems to have changed all that. Before Bluetooth 5.0 all but the most expensive TW earbuds would continually drop out, crackle, pop and generally prove more trouble than they were worth. These earbuds use Bluetooth 5.4 technology which is supported by the latest high-end smartphones but of course, they will also work with older Bluetooth devices. Bluetooth 5 adds a longer range and greatly improves both the stability of the wireless connection and battery life and v5.4 gives even better sound quality, greater range and enhanced reliability.
First time pairing could not be simpler and took just a few seconds. Simply remove the buds from the case and they automatically go into pairing mode. Pair them in the usual way to your phone looking for the name ‘TRUEFREE Clip C10 ‘. You can also begin the pairing process from the Truefree app. Subsequently, taking the buds from the case powers them on, and they connect to each other and to the phone automatically, returning them to the case turns them off and begins charging. Don't worry about getting left and right buds mixed up as they are both physically identical but will electronically identify themselves and connect to the correct channel, a feature I have not seen before. This headset can connect to two Bluetooth phones simultaneously. To do so after pairing to the first phone, keep the headset turned on but switch off Bluetooth on the first phone and pair to the second. When the first device is turned on again it will automatically connect to the headset simultaneously with the second. There is a reset button on the case available should you need to manually initiate pairing.
You should get at least 8 hours of music time from each 90-minute bud charge and about 28 hours in total from a fully charged case, which takes just 2 hours minutes to charge. There is a charging status LED on the case which confirms the charging status.
I must say I was impressed by the Truefree app, the best designed, easiest to use and most comprehensive headset control app I have yet tried. I was pleased to see that on first connecting a firmware update for the buds was available. Here are some of the main features available:
Firmware Update
EQ Presets
Custom EQ
Adaptive EQ
User Guide Access
Low Latency Gaming Mode
Movie Mode
Customise bud Controls
Find Lost Earbuds
Customise Voice Prompts
White Noise Relaxation
System Reset
A wide range of EQ features are on offer and unlike with many rivals, here the settings really do work. With the bass boost preset I found the sound quality was excellent. The bass is satisfyingly prominent without being overwhelming with mid tones that are clear and well defined and a high end that is neither harsh nor sibilant. The app also offers a few other features including the ability to turn off the touch buttons on the buds themselves, so no more accidental track skipping or audio muting! The app can also be used to switch on the low-latency Gaming Mode.
Each bud has a single soft touch button on it which can be used to end/reject calls, play/pause music, navigate tracks, alter volume and invoke your phone’s voice assistant. The buds are IPX5 water resistant which makes them fine in light or medium rain but don’t immerse them in water.
The buds are small, neat and comfortable to wear even up to the full 8 hours of music per charge. After a short while, I entirely forgot I was wearing them as the open-ear design allows you to remain fully aware of the outside world. Calls were clear to hear and easy to make, perhaps due to onboard AI microphone noise reduction.
These headphones are well priced for the technology available, indeed this headset compares very well with the high-end rivals I have tried regarding sound quality and features. I have to say that this is one of the best headsets I have ever used and easily the best at the current price point.
