"This impermanent world is like a waterfall. A repetition of similar events gives the impression of continuity."
-Kalu Rinpoche

Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
Kalu Rinpoche was a great Tibetan master of the early part of this last century and came to the West many times and really inspired and influenced many people. He was a truly great meditation master, very wise. In this quote, he is asking us to examine events of the world and things that come to our senses very carefully. If we look at a waterfall, it seems like there's a waterfall. There's something happening, something that's a real thing, but if we look very closely, what is a waterfall? It's made of many, many, many, many drops of water falling one after the other. There is no single thing. There is only a process of change. And if we look closely in this way, we see that everything is composed of parts and pieces that are following one after the other, and this is true of everything in our life, in our world, everything is a continuous process as opposed to a thing. So when Buddhism talks about impermanence, it means everything is changing. A waterfall, every moment, it's a different set of water. It's not the same thing as it was before. This is the meaning of impermanence, that in every moment, things are different, things are new, things are fresh, things are changing. What happened a moment ago is already in the past. So in this way, we use impermanence to understand that there is nothing to really be attached to. So, impermanence is actually a way to lessen our attachment to things.
