So tonight we are going back to 1984 with an album that at this time was so feared and loathed that it scared the living shit out of people. That's right tonights review is of Bathory's Self Titled Debut album.
First of all before we go any further here let's address the elephant in the room. The great Bathory Vs Venom debate that is always a hot topic. Who invented Black metal of course and this discussion has been going on for 37 years. Yes folks thats a true testament to the importance of this genre of metal. You see black metal began as a direct response and opposition to the rampant rise of thrash, death, grind and hardcore punk.
Well ive never for one second thought it was Venom at all because i simply hear absolutely nothing reminsicent of black metal in that bands entire sound, approach, composition or ideology... so basically? Venom did not invent black metal so get your head out of your ass!
Bathory was a band that was formed by the legend himself Quorthon. Formed in 1983 by Quorthon, Jonas Åkerlund, and Frederick Melander, but didn't come up with the name of the band until the recording of Scandinavian Metal Attack.
When Quorthon formed the band in 1983, his nickname was originally Black Spade. He soon changed it to Ace Shoot, then finally to Quorthon, a name ...a name he found in a list of demons.
Contrary to popular belief, Bathory never released an official demo: the first recording is a never released rehearsal containing four tracks: “Sacrifice”, “Live in Sin”, “Die in Fire” and “You Don’t Move Me (I Don't Give a Fuck)”. Only the last two tracks survived and later were bootlegged.
They played only a few live shows (probably between 6 and 8) in the early days. Quorthon refused to play live ever since.
Now the lineup on Bathory's first album was as follows
Quorthon (R.I.P. 2004) Vocals, Guitars
Stefan Larsson Drums
Alright so lets get into this album and everything it did for black metal. Right from the opening of "hades" we hear some really dark chanting going on with church bells and thunderous ominous ambience in the background. This lets you know whats coming and what is to be expected. Now you have to remember that back in 1984 there was NOTHING like this out there in the world of metal and to this day it stands as THE definining album of what started the darkness and evil of what evolved into Satanic Black Metal.
Now granted as Bathory went on after their first 4 albums? Quorthon opted to start to tap into his viking heritage and roots and also created Viking metal as well as black metal. Right there you have a man who was responsible for the birth of 2 genres in less than 10 years.
Quite the accomplishment for a single musician now isnt it? But thats only the tip of the iceberg because what this record did for extreme music was set a new standard of what extreme music was and what it stood for. This album is nothing short of miraculous and benchmarking on every aspect.
Now alot of people say that Bathory is basically the Black Metal version of Motorhead and you know? I tend to agree as you can definitely here alot of that Motorhead influence all over this album. However there is something much darker and evil at work here.
This was a new vocal style that was in the vein of a high pitch rasping that sounded so fucking dark and evil that you would swear it was satan himself screeching over the primal raw bombastic drumming and ice cold riffing that sends chills down your godamned spine throughout the entire albums 24 minute duration.
