The ostrich is the largest and heaviest living bird on Earth, known for its towering height, powerful legs, and distinctive appearance. Native to the open savannas and deserts of Africa, the ostrich is a flightless bird but a masterful runner — capable of reaching speeds up to 70 km/h (43 mph).

An adult ostrich stands between 7 to 9 feet tall and can weigh up to 150 kilograms (330 pounds). Its body is covered in soft, loose feathers — black and white in males, grayish-brown in females — which provide insulation rather than flight. Its long, bare neck and legs give it an unmistakable silhouette, while its large eyes (the biggest of any land animal) provide excellent vision, helping it detect predators from great distances.

Instead of flying, the ostrich relies on its long, muscular legs to outrun threats. Each foot has two large toes, with the larger inner toe bearing a sharp claw that can deliver a powerful kick — an effective defense against predators like lions or hyenas.

Ostriches are omnivorous, feeding mainly on plants, seeds, roots, and insects. They often swallow small stones to help grind food in their gizzard. Their diet and ability to extract water from plants enable them to survive in arid environments.
