Does "Kids Take the Religion of their Parents" Explain Why There are so Many Christians?

You've probably heard some atheist claim that Christianity is so prominent because children adopt the religion of their parents. Does this argument explain why Christianity is the top religion on earth today? There may be some value in this claim, but it isn't what they think it is.
