BioShock Infinite | Who is Booker DeWitt and Columbia, the city in the sky?
Gameplay Part 1
Indebted to the wrong people, with his life on the line, veteran of the U.S. Cavalry and now hired gun, Booker DeWitt has only one opportunity to wipe his slate clean. He must rescue Elizabeth, a mysterious girl imprisoned since childhood and locked up in the flying city of Columbia. Forced to trust one another, Booker and Elizabeth form a powerful bond during their daring escape. Together, they learn to harness an expanding arsenal of weapons and abilities, as they fight on zeppelins in the clouds, along high-speed Sky-Lines, and down in the streets of Columbia, all while surviving the threats of the air-city and uncovering its dark secret.
In this playthrough we cover:
Lighthouse:
Booker DeWitt arrives at a remote lighthouse off the coast of Maine in 1912, sent with the cryptic instruction: “Bring us the girl and wipe away the debt.” Instead of refuge, the lighthouse houses a rocket-like device that launches him skyward—toward the floating city of Columbia.
Welcome Center:
Booker crash-lands in Columbia’s church-like entryway, bathed in light and religious iconography. Baptized upon entry, he finds himself in a pristine, idyllic version of America—one ruled by the prophet Father Comstock—before making his way into the city proper.
Raffle Square:
During Columbia’s Founders Day festival, Booker is invited to partake in a “raffle” that quickly reveals its dark racial underpinnings. When his identity as the “false shepherd” is discovered, chaos erupts, forcing Booker to fight his way out as the city’s once-charming façade shatters.
Comstock Center Rooftops:
Booker escapes through the rooftops of Columbia, engaging in violent firefights with the police and discovering the Sky-Line rail system. Along the way, he begins encountering propaganda about Comstock’s messianic role and his prophesied battle against the false shepherd.
Monument Island Gateway:
Pushing deeper into the city, Booker navigates industrial zones and security checkpoints leading to Monument Island—where “the girl” is kept. The mood grows increasingly eerie, with surveillance systems and warnings about the danger Elizabeth supposedly poses.
Monument Tower:
Inside the Tower, Booker uncovers a twisted scientific environment filled with observation chambers and machines built to contain Elizabeth’s powers. He finally meets her face-to-face, triggering a chaotic escape as Songbird—the monstrous guardian—gives chase.
Battleship Bay:
Booker and Elizabeth wash ashore at Battleship Bay, a carnival-like beach resort floating over the sea of clouds. The pair share brief moments of peace—dancing, sightseeing—before the Vox Populi and Comstock’s forces discover them, reigniting the conflict.
Soldier’s Field:
Trying to commandeer an airship to escape Columbia, Booker takes Elizabeth through Soldier’s Field—an amusement park devoted to military glorification. Elizabeth’s growing discomfort with Booker’s violent methods begins to surface as they steal supplies to power the ship.
The Hall of Heroes:
Booker and Elizabeth enter a propaganda museum showcasing Columbia’s version of American history and the founding wars. The level satirizes jingoism and whitewashed patriotism, and Booker must battle through mechanical Founding Fathers and soldiers to progress.
Inside the Hall of Heroes:
As they fight their way deeper into the Hall, Booker faces Slate—an old war comrade turned fanatic, who resents Comstock for rewriting history. Slate challenges Booker to prove his worth, forcing him to confront past atrocities while earning new powers through infusions and Vigors.
Hall of Heroes Gift Shop:
In the gift shop turned battleground, Booker retrieves Shock Jockey, a crucial Vigor needed to power the airship. He must also decide the fate of Slate—kill him out of mercy or leave him to face Comstock’s wrath. The choice foreshadows the moral grayness to come.
Return to Hall of Heroes:
Armed with Shock Jockey, Booker and Elizabeth fight their way back through Columbia’s defenders to reactivate the Sky-Line system. Tension grows between the two as Elizabeth begins to see Booker’s true nature—and the city’s illusions start to crack further.
