The Disappearing Lady: A Midnight Ghost Story from Maharashtra

The family lived in a small town near Nanded, Maharashtra. My grandpa was a government officer and was posted in Aurangabad then. He used to visit the family during the weekends.

It was 12 midnight, and grandpa’s train was supposed to arrive at this time. Grandma was awake, waiting for him to reach home. She could see the small street through the window. Suddenly, she felt as if she’s seen a hazy image of a woman walking down the street. So she went near the window to get a clear idea. There indeed was a woman wearing green saree and a big red bindi on her forehead. From her overall appearance with all the jewellery that she was wearing, she seemed to be from a very affluent family. Grandma kept observing for some time to see if the lady is being followed by someone (may be her servants who might be carrying her luggage). But there was no one else to be seen. The lady kept on walking. Suddenly, after walking 3–4 steps more, she disappeared!! Whooosshhh!!

My grandma was scared as hell. She narrated this encounter to the neighbors and came to know that many of them had witnessed and seen the lady walking down the street and disappearing to nowhere. She was seen during Amavasya (new moon). It is said that the lady had died when she was pregnant.
