CAPE FEAR MERMAIDS & LAKE NORMAN MONSTER: CREATURES OF THE CAROLINAS

The rich history of the Carolinas in the Southeastern United States includes many stories of strange creatures that date back centuries ago. Deep in the forest of North Carolina, two rivers converge to form the mouth of the Cape Fear, where Revolutionary War soldiers told tales of seeing beautiful mermaids sitting along a sandbar, playing and splashing in the water, and even combing their hair in the moonlight. Mermaids were seen there several times throughout the war, and some believed they swam there to wash the saltwater from their beautiful hair. A tavern sat close-by and most of the eyewitnesses were patrons of that tavern.

The tavern was destroyed in a flood around the 19th century, around the same time that the mermaid sightings ceased. The disappearance of the mermaids also coincides with the building of the first of a series of dams and locks along the course of the Cape Fear, which certainly blocked off path of the mermaids up from the sea.

On this episode of “A Glitch in the Matrix,” Jessica explores the Cape Fear mermaids and the numerous historical accounts of other strange cryptid creatures in North and South Carolina with Dr. Dennis Carroll.
