Happy One Year Adoption Date

Wow y'all! Yesterday was Sunny Boy's one year adoption date! Can you believe that I've had him for a year already!? Time sure does fly.

Sunny prefers a quiet morning and likes to wake up slowly.

He came to me only eating a high quality pellet, as I was told that Sunny doesn't like to eat anything else. He likes millet, sunflower seeds, almonds, raw oats and likes to snatch up some of Luka's seeds when I am getting them fresh food and water. He also likes organic coconut oil as a treat and nut and berry treats.

This entire year Sunny had not shown any signs of being able to fly, until recently. He flew a short distance and then he made it from the living room all the way to the kitchen back door! I couldn't believe it! Last night I was teaching him to fly from me to his play-stand and on his second try, he made it and you can see in the video that he was so proud of himself!

Sunny has a colorful vocabulary and he says a lot of different words and phrases but he only talks when he wants to. He has learned many new words and phrases since I adopted him.

He likes to show off his wings, dance and hang upside down. He likes to sing but he only sings just a few notes to encourage me to sing to him so that he can focus on dancing.

Sunny isn't very destructive and his toys last way too long but he is learning how to play and chew. He doesn't like it when I change his house and move his toys and perches around. He acts like he is afraid to go in. The last few times I make sure that he was hanging out on his house so he can see everything that I am doing, plus I only move a couple of toys at a time and it has helped a lot!

He loves to be outside, sitting on my lap while I pet him and help him preen.

I am the apple in Sunny's eye but he really likes my husband too. We call him Jungle Jim 😂 Sunny loves to play with him and go after his feet, his hat and his zipper on his jeans.

Sunny Boy loves cards! He has been learning his A B C's and he really loves to help with tarot readings.

He loves clothes! Sunny has learned to fold washcloths but after doing it a few times he's decided that he will no longer be doing that 😂

Sunny is definitely not fond of Lord Luka flying too close but he is learning that Luka is not a threat.

This poor fella has been molting excessively since I adopted him as he was already in the process. Searching high and low, trying to understand why this was happening, I finally found the most logical answer. Sunny was in several other homes before me. Back and forth to the store, up for adoption. The one before me kept him for only 2 months and ended up being back at the store. I believe that it was very stressful for him and with his age of being 2-8 years old, he has been going through a lot of hormonal changes. He is finally almost done molting! Phew!

We have learned how to do his grooming at home because he gets car sick. We have been doing a great job with that!

Sunny Boy loves to play with newspaper! Even moreso, he likes to try to trick me so that he can get my fingers! 😂 He likes to bite whether he is playful, excited or upset about something. He has learned that fingers are not a toy, unless he is "nice". I use positive reinforcement by offering him appropriate toys to bite and chew.

He has only gotten aggressive towards me 3 times. I think that is pretty good considering that this is my first time with a bigger bird.

I do a shit ton of research by reading the things I Google and I watch a lot of YouTube videos. I've also had a friend I can ask questions about anything I am not sure of. I owe her a lot for all of her help.

I'm sure that I am forgetting a lot of things to list with this post because there have been so many milestones in the past year. Sunny Boy is an amazing creature and we love him beyond words. Learning him isn't always easy compared to my cockatiel.

Regardless of the breed of parrots, they all have their own unique personalities and preferences.

The key to everything is routine, patience and time. Lots of time!
Each parrot progresses at their own pace. We cannot rush it or force it. I have learned so much just by watching both of my birds. If we pay attention to detail we can excel in the relationship we have with them. Respect their boundaries and take things slow. Sunny and I have a very strong bond because of the way I do things with him and for him.

I am sure that more milestones are on the way! I am so excited to see where we go from here!

I love both of my boys so very much and I don't know what I'd do without them. They bring so much love and laughter into my life and they make me feel special 🥰
