I needed a small and compact coffee machine for use in my small and compact home office. I am not a coffee connoisseur and a simple drip filter machine would be fine for me, something quick and easy to set up and use. I was strongly tempted by the SAGE coffee maker but the size, price and complexity put me off despite the rave reviews. In the end I settled on this one, due to the price, the insulated carafe to keep the brewed coffee hot without stewing it, and the timer. I liked the idea of setting the machine up the previous evening and getting up to fresh hot coffee every morning.

In the box I received the coffee machine, carafe, nylon brewing filter, coffee scoop and user guide. I have to say the machine itself was much lighter and more cheaply made than I hoped for, the brushed aluminium finish proved to be plastic and the filter holder assembly felt a bit rickety and cheap. The carafe, on the other hand, was heavy duty and well made from metal and my hopes were high that it would indeed keep my coffee hot. The user guide was detailed and informative but poorly translated and rather poorly printed.

The first thing I noticed after plugging it in was that the small mono LCD panel was not backlit and rather hard to read. The display shows the time of day and the timer setting for automatic coffee making. This can be programmed through the front panel buttons but as there is no battery backup both the clock and timer settings are lost each time the device is unplugged. Also, after the first couple of days I found I was unable to set the time or the timer, it just stopped responding to button presses. I did not mind too much as it is no big deal to press the On button each morning and indeed, that gave me a more flexible start to my day.

One important point to note, and I found this out the hard way, is that it is crucial to rotate the locking seal on the carafe lid to align with the front of the carafe before brewing the coffee. Failure to do so not only prevents any coffee already in the carafe from keeping warm, but means that newly brewed coffee cascades down the outside of the carafe. This is not an issue with the carafe or coffee machine, just with the user.

So what is the coffee like from this machine? Well not bad at all, particularly when the Aroma mode is selected, this increases the brewing time but yields a stronger and richer cup. The carafe keeps the coffee hot for a decent length of time, no not the 8 hours claimed but 3 or 4 certainly.

In conclusion, I would say this is an attractively designed although rather cheaply made machine that can make a decent coffee brew and keep it warm for several hours after doing so. It does have a timer mode but do not count on it working and in fact you are better off without it. For the current pre discount price of £59 it is probably not a bad buy.
