Alright so tonights review is of a classic dating all the way back to 1994 with Meshuggah-NONE. This is the first Meshuggah review here on the channel and there are many more coming as this is one of my favorite bands. Now the line up at this time consisted of:
Jens Kidman Vocals
Fredrik Thordendal Guitars
Mårten Hagström Guitars (rhythm)
Peter Nordin Bass
Tomas Haake Drums
The album opens with the track “Humiliative” and it has some really awesome groovy guitar work and some crazy off time riffs as well. Bass and drums can be heard really well. Jens vocals are absolutely awesome on this track as well! There is a lot of passion and conviction on here and this was a stepping stone for meshuggah’s crazy and disjointed music. You can hear elements of what made them so unique even back as far as 1994 on this EP. The music here is very pissed off, maniacal and rage fueled. The “solo” if you can call it that is so messed up and off time that it gives the music a very schizophrenic vibe! The vocals do too and you can certainly feel the authenticity here for sure! Killer opening track
Next up we have the track “Sickening” and there is that feeling all over this song. The off time riffs, drumming and bass coupled with Jens vocals really separates meshuggah from so many bands around this time. To this day they are still one of the most unique bands.
Opening this one we get a really crazy driving riff that could be considered early “djent” lots of brutal chugging and heaviness give this track a very industrial feel as well. The emotional complexities of meshuggah’s music will take you through many peaks and valleys but also paint pictures of futuristic wars and apocalyptic landscapes. This song really reminds me of someone watching the world become infected by the mechanical revolution and human enslavement. In fact the lyrics point to these themes almost exclusively. Killer song here as well!
Next up we have my favorite song on the album with “Ritual” and this one opens with one of the most beautifully hypnotic clean guitar riffs ive ever heard in my life. So enchanting and beautiful man. The guitars take center stage on this track and showcase all of their talents individually as well. The song sounds like the title as well. “Ritualistic and powerful with tons of real aggression, complextity and pardoxical time signatures that the band became famous for and these elements are what helped them craft one of most unique metal styles in the fucking genre.
This is a trip into dementia and insanity with Meshuggah providing the soundtrack to an apocalyptic wasteland with no human in sight. Only manufactured machines laying waste to everything. Lets listen to “Ritual” here on music of destruction. …. And we are back… yes this is one Meshuggahs best songs in my opinion. This EP was fucking groundbreaking and its still one of their best albums in my humble opinion. Killer song here too guys!
