Alright so tonight we are reviewing another absolute classic and I finally got one of their albums which im so excited to be talking about here tonight yes guys tonight I am reviewing DIO-Master Of The Moon which was released in 2004 on Sanctuary Records and produced by Ronnie James Dio himself which is absolutely amazing in my eyes and Master of The Moon is an amazing record as well and im sure you’ll agree if you are a fan of DIO in any sense of the matter!
The lineup on Master Of The Moon is as follows
Ronnie James Dio-Vocals
Craig Goldy-Guitar/Keyboards
Simon Wright-Drums
Jeff Pilson-Bass
Scott Warren-Keyboards
Now in my opinion this lineup was one of the most cohesive because when Jeff and Craig were in the band previously? I feel that those albums were among Dio’s best in the discography and I think this lineup was something really special, but that can be said about every member who was in and out of Dio because they all brought something very special to Dio and there isn’t any member in Dio that I could complain about
lets get into the review shall we?
So the album opens with “one for the road” which opens with a really heavy driving guitar riff that has all of the ingredients of a classic dio album. One thing that I have always admired about this band is the level of consistency and Ronnie’s uncompromising attitude at the idea of commercialism he never thought of doing songs that would make the band more popular. He always said “ill never make music that doesn’t come from the heart” These principles are certainly intact on this album and this track is no different. The drums, bass and guitar work are absolutely stellar and Ronnie sounds as amazing as he ever did before on previous albums.
All of the kick ass elements of Dio are here and this is a stellar opener with a heavy driving force that makes you feel empowered and strong and that’s what makes Dio so awesome because the music is always about overcoming personal adversity through escapism and a lot of the fantasy themes were metaphors for triumph over negativity..
Next up is the title track Master Of The Moon and this is a slower track but it still is heavy and driving with a lot of emphasis on creating a personal triumph and lyrically its all about someone who doesn’t fit in with people so the whole point of this track is to become a master of yourself and be proud of you who are you and the music definitely carries this theme throughout the track.
The drum work bass, guitars and ronnies vocals definitely give you that feeling of nostalgia and power. I mean guys this is what old school heavy metal is all about and the guitar solo in this track is electrifying and powerful as well and the song also touches on embracing what makes you unique and being proud of it while reminding you that just because your different doesn’t mean then aren’t other people who are the same as you! This is another killer track
Next up we have “The Man Who Would Be King” and this one opens with a slow piano passage with Dio singing about how much disdain he has for religion yet its not In the vehement anti Christian fashion, because these lyrics hold a lot more intelligence and meaning in my opinion and the classic slower heavy metal epic build up opens this track before it breaks into a slow mid paced crawl of traditional metal brilliance complete with powerful riffing and drum work but it certainly bears resemblance to hard rock with metal thrown in for good measure with some incredible lead sections on the guitar as well.
This is a really great song as well and my interpretation of the lyrics is to always make up your own mind and realize that religion isn’t necessary to live a happy existence. This is a great epic metal classic but also has a lot of great slower hard rock moments so it’s a perfect combination with some amazing solo work thrown in as well!
