Charlie Chaplin’s 57th Film, Behind the Screen, was released on November 13, 1916.
This silent short film was written and directed by Chaplin, who also stars alongside Eric Campbell and Edna Purviance. Set inside a bustling movie studio, Chaplin takes on the role of David, a stagehand working under the watchful eye of his overbearing supervisor, Goliath, played by Campbell.

The film is rich in Chaplin’s signature slapstick humor but also weaves in timely themes, including a workers' strike among the stagehands. Another subplot follows Purviance’s character, who, unable to land a job as an actress, disguises herself as a man to work behind the scenes.

Behind the Screen offers a playful, behind-the-scenes glimpse at early filmmaking while blending comedy with social commentary — all without a single word spoken.
