The Motherland Calls

The Motherland Calls statue in Volgograd was constructed using pre-stressed concrete for the core structure, covered by steel wire reinforcement to handle the immense tensile forces from its dynamic pose and extended sword.

The statue stands 85 meters (279 feet) tall and weighs over 8,000 tons, with the sword itself made from stainless steel sheathed around a titanium frame to reduce weight and resist corrosion.

Assembly involved casting the concrete in large, interlocking segments around a central support spine, then welding and securing the sword separately.

Complex internal tension cables help stabilize the statue against strong winds and seismic activity.
